Posting pictures (II)

Posted by hausaonline on Wednesday, February 11, 2009

I have just found a new photoblog titled “Kasar Hausa Photoblog“. This prompted me to remind you of an earlier post in which I asked my readers what they think about posting pictures. Any comments?

Its a bit hard to comment on because I am not sure why the earlier reader found a picture of a cow and people in a pickup to be culturally offensive. I guess they were concerned that you were mocking the poverty of the area… is that right? I certainly agree on the need to be respectful, particularly with internet post. But I also feel like its a bit of an out of touch idea of cultural sensitivity… I mean I have seen cattle and people together on vehicles multiple times here in this part of Hausa country. Yes, surely it is a function of the poverty of the region, but I am not sure it is offensive.

I guess with being a respectful photo blogger, one has to ask oneself:
    1) “Was taking this photo respectful of the pictured within their cultural context?”
    2) “Will displaying this photo to ‘whoever sees it on the internet’… convey a respectful image of the pictured within the cultural context of the viewer.”

With question 1, you have a broad framework for photos for personal use. Question 2 becomes tricky, as you obviously discovered.

Anyway, I just love this blog… your ideas and resources are great. I am totally tracking with you on your ideas and they have been a great help. Ka cigaba!

I am afraid you are right. And I didn’t foresee this reaction. I really didn’t mean to convey the idea that in Nigeria people are so poor that humans and cattle need to share cars. But somehow one reader of that post must have felt that I was trying to do just that.

Thanks for your encouragement. I am happy to know that my ideas are helpful for others.
